In last week’s blog, we shared how Oster and Associates is a supporter of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, not only as a way of promoting our mission of community service, but also because two of our team members have personally battled the disease. One of those team members, Hannah, is the 2016 Susan G. Komen San Diego Honorary Survivor of the Year.
Our commitment to supporting causes goes well beyond the month of October. As marketing and PR experts, we know it’s important to genuinely care about the causes we support. A company can show true dedication to a nonprofit organization by backing a cause year-round, not simply during the popular month to do so.
A fantastic example of a company that has successfully turned an October Breast Cancer Awareness campaign into a long-lasting program is our client, Proven Winners. In 2009, the plan propagator created a new strain of “Annabelle” hydrangea in a beautiful pink color. The first-ever pink plant of its varietal, the Invincibelle® Spirit Hydrangea is available year-round, not simply during the month of October. Proven Winners donates $1 from every Invincibelle® Spirit sold to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation ®. Today, more than 160 garden centers offer the plant and more than $900,000 has been donated to the foundation. Proven Winners is dedicated to donating $1 million to the cause.
Oster itself is another example of how to adopt a cause, having committed to supporting our client, the San Diego Food Bank, through volunteer days in honor of our 30th anniversary. Once a month since July, we close our office doors at noon and head to the Food Bank to help sort and pack food for those in our community who need it the most.
