Internships are a valuable experience for students who are figuring out their career path. Interns are able to experience what it will be like to work in their potential field and what kind of responsibilities they will have as an employee. Oster and Associates offers internships for students year-round. We were fortunate to have two great interns for the spring 2018 semester. Here are the stories of our most recent interns, Alexica and Marie.
Alexica: It has been an incredible experience interning at Oster and Associates and working with professionals who have shaped my future in so many ways. I came here with zero knowledge of working in a marketing agency. Today, I feel more than prepared to take on the advertising world before me.
During the December 2017 – January 2018 break, I wrote down a list of characteristics that describe my personality and the places I desired intern for. I thought it was a good place to start since this would be my first internship ever. My top three words were “innovative,” “passionate,” and “transparent.” When I started my background research, I found that Oster and Associates had checkmarks across the board of my expectations and dream agency.
Oster and Associates surpassed my expectations. The team is a tight-knit bunch who are dedicated to giving their best to clients, co-workers and student interns. I never came to work dreading a job I couldn’t handle. The office culture revolves around constant support and communication, which is what kept me afloat during research, media buying, production proposals and copywriting tasks.
I have been very fortunate to gain hands-on experience in all areas of advertising, marketing, and public relations at this full-service agency. It even gave me a better appreciation of my major in journalism and its foundation in research. And funny enough, I’ve started to understand the marketing world of horticulture, produce, tourism and cannabis. “Never say never” still rings true, and I’m glad I got the chance to see it in action.
I will never forget my time at Oster and Associates, and I recommend students from all backgrounds to apply for the internship program when availability opens.
Marie: I started my internship at Oster and Associates during the last semester of my master’s degree in PR and Digital Communication at IHECS in Belgium.
My prior internship experience was at a Belgian Newspaper, but this time, I wanted to go out of my comfort zone and do my internship abroad. The USA was, of course, my first choice since I have loved this country and its culture for so many years. I decided to leave rainy Belgium for sunny San Diego.
I chose to intern at Oster because it’s a full-service marketing agency owned by a woman who has been in business for more than 30 years! I wanted work for a company where I would be able to learn new skills but also doing tasks I know I love to do.
During my internship, I’ve had the opportunity to do a variety of tasks in PR and in social media. I also had the chance to express my creativity by crafting proposals for new clients, designing social media posts and shooting videos for Oster. What I liked most about this internship was that I was treated as a member of the team and was able to give my own ideas. Also, as a Belgian, it was very interesting to be immersed in the American business culture.
Being alone in another country is not always easy but can be a challenging adventure. After spending three months at Oster, I can really say that this company, and this experience, made me evolve professionally and personally.
