Sunny Southern California. It’s the land of beautiful beaches and laid- back surfers, palm trees and ocean breezes, beach days and bonfire nights. T-shirts, shorts and flip-flops are the usual. Famous for our warm, picture-perfect temperatures, it’s hard to imagine SoCal as a winter sports destination. That’s where we come in.
For over eight years we’ve worked with Big Bear Mountain Resorts (BBMR), which includes Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. With the right messages, we get people talking, get them excited, and get them on the mountain!
But how do you inspire people to head from the sand to the slopes? How do you let people know that even in the home of the endless summer we have a winter wonderland right here in our own backyard? It’s all about effective public relations and marketing. Consider the following tips we’ve assembled for making the most of your winter marketing:
Share Your Story!
Most skiers and snowboarders don’t actually live near the mountains, so invest in a robust public relations plan to share your story and bring the mountains to them. We spend our days coming up with new and unique angles and story ideas, pitching the media on everything from snowboard competitions to the hottest winter fashions to festivals and events on the mountain. We ensure meteorologists and weather anchors at every station in San Diego and Los Angeles receive timely information on snow conditions, and when a storm comes through- they’re the first to know! They in turn, let their audiences know, which often gets people excited to bust out their snow gear and head up to the mountains. A strategic public relations plan is essential to your marketing efforts.
Be a ‘Social’ Butterfly.
Facebook, Instagram, Vine and Twitter are great platforms for sharing content- especially photos and videos. Every day, BBMR posts photos and videos from the mountain, and encourages skiers and snowboarders to do the same by promoting user-generated content. Visuals are crucial to successful winter marketing, because talking about the snow is one thing…but seeing it is quite another. Photos and videos of snowboarders and skiers carving down picturesque mountain slopes blanketed with fresh powder does wonders to get people thinking about their next trip. Make sure you’re part of the conversation by staying social and providing ample photo and video content, and engaging with user-generated content as well.
Last but not least…get out there! You’ll like this one…trust us. As marketing professionals, we often spend a lot of time behind our desks. Every once and a while, get up and get out into the snowy stuff! It’ll remind you about what you love about winter, and may just give you renewed inspiration for your marketing efforts. At Oster and Associates, we love to bundle up and break out our skis and snowboards. It always excites us and gives us new ideas for our marketing and public relations efforts.
So grab your skis and snowboards, folks! We’ll see you on the slopes!
