Internal Communications: Keys to Success

Successful internal communications are a major driver of success for many businesses and organizations. It is hard to connect with the outside world, new customers or potential business partners unless a team can first communicate well within itself.

For instance, you might have a great idea to make a company more efficient, create a message that is both clear and concise or design a new logo. Unless you filled your office with skilled mind readers, explaining one’s inspiration behind a vision and motivating other team members is essential.

It has become too easy to skip right past the crucial steps of creating a clearly laid out plan because it can seem boring or mundane. How do you expect all members of your team to move in the same direction if they don’t know what direction they should be moving from the start?

Tone, word selection, body language and timing all impact how we perceive others and how others perceive us. When an idea is shared, pause for a moment before getting excited, frustrated or worried. If you are having any of these types of feelings, stop to ask yourself why. Then, be ready to harness that emotion into making sure that other team members understand the end goal(s) and which role(s) they will play in the process.

Talking to someone face-to-face, on the phone, via email or even text are all acceptable channels to make sure that everyone is on the same page. If not, have a discussion to answer any unresolved questions before moving forward. Never be afraid to speak up and tell someone that you need clarification or just want to confirm something.

The more knowledge you have before making a decision or carrying out a task will help you overcome obstacles as they present themselves and likely mean greater success for everyone involved.
